To help dog owners prepare for the Fourth of July, the Humane Society for Southwest Washington is hosting a Protect Your Pet event from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday.
The session, held in collaboration with Good Neighbor Vet, will be in the education center at the Humane Society, 1100 N.E. 192nd Ave.
During the July 4 holiday a year ago, the Humane Society took in 58 dogs that ran away from their homes because of fireworks.
The Protect Your Pet event offers licensing and microchipping, which helps reunite lost pets with their owners.
"Many animals are frightened by loud noises, and July 4 is the day when we take in the most lost animals," Lisa Feder, director of shelter operations, said in a news release.
"We encourage owners to license and chip their pets, making it easier to get them home if they run away," Feder said.
The Humane Society will be open on July 4 to help care for animals that have run away or are lost.
More information about pet licensing and microchipping may be found at http://www.southwesthumane.org, or by calling 360-693-4746.
The Humane Society also offers licensing and microchip services Tuesday through Sunday, from noon to 6 p.m., in the shelter's intake area.
