Getting dealt out of a downtown casino didn?t bother its would-be neighbours.
?There?s little evidence showing that downtown casinos are economic drivers,? said ByWard Market Business Improvement Association executive director Jasna Jennings.
Her BIA had been adamantly opposed to a casino in or near the Market, citing a study showing gamblers tend to exhaust their money inside casinos, without much spillover to neighbouring shops.
And while there may be appear to be a general economic benefit to the city, Jennings said that would easily be frittered away thanks to higher policing costs and foundering local businesses.
A casino at the Rideau Carleton Raceway, however, opens up a glut of partnership opportunities. like a shuttle linking it with the Market.
?As a tourist, you?re going to have a good experience all around,? she said.
Jeff Morrison has entirely different reasons for welcoming Watson?s about-face.
Though the board president of the Centretown Community Health Centre said any increase in the city?s gambling capacity remains a concern, scrapping the downtown idea ?is a step in the right direction.?
?It doesn?t enable the access that a downtown casino would have,? he said.
That, in turn, lessens the social cost of a casino; the centre noted in March that groups like the poor and the elderly are especially vulnerable to gambling addition.
The Sparks Street BIA was also OK with Watson?s change of heart.
?No Casino downtown? What will we do now?? the association tweeted late Monday.
?Can you say zipline??
