Small business human resources may benefit from setting guidelines on working from home, as evidence shows electronic communications?should be used primarily for enhancing relationships between coworkers, not maintaining them fully.
Office work is necessary for success
Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer has been criticized for her announcement that employees at her company will no longer be able to work from home, and CNN columnist Amanda Enayati, who operates this way daily, says, despite her initial harsh feelings towards Mayer?s decision, she understands that there may be good reasons behind the move.?In addition to being more in-the-know about large business operations, Mayer, a major player among women business owners, is making a move that MIT research scientist Ben Waber? says?will likely help the struggling organization.
?Obviously there?s a big difference between working from home every day of the year and telecommuting occasionally,? Waber?told Enayati. ?There are pros and cons to both arguments, but when you look at the data alone, there is compelling evidence that individuals coming in to work physically at Yahoo may benefit the company.?
Waber?is currently collecting data about workers? lives in and out of the office by sifting through all the sources of electronic communication used, including emails, messages and meeting notes, which his team of MIT and Harvard scientists uses to project solutions for better workplace management.
Emails are a?support, not a?foundation, for communication
A study by TrackVia?supports?Waber?s findings by noting that electronic communication might not maximize company production outside the office. However, it does add to better work when incorporated with regular in-person meetings. The research company?s vice president of marketing announced allowing employees to work from home primarily is not necessarily?the best strategy for businesses.
?When it comes to increasing workplace productivity, it?s clear that tools like email and instant messaging help, but don?t replace personal collaboration,? he said in statement.
Mayer?s plan to eliminate work-from-home days at Yahoo are supported by facts, as Enayati?states in her CNN editorial, and the flack she is getting from the press?may be?because Mayer is a mother of young children, a type that often benefits from workplace flexibility. Enayati concludes that regardless of Mayer?s family situation, in the end she will be judged based solely on the success or failure of the company she is responsible for keeping afloat.
