Panel Passes Bipartisan Singer Bill to End Costly Health Insurance ...

Senator Robert Singer (R-Monmouth, Ocean) is a step closer to eliminating the state requirement that every student who is enrolled full-time at a public or private institution of higher education in New Jersey maintain and show proof of health insurance coverage. Senator Singer?s bipartisan bill S-2291 was unanimously passed today by the Senate Higher Education Committee.

?The increasing cost of college has New Jersey students and their families reeling,? Singer said. ?Far too many struggle to even finish degrees that they have already paid tens of thousands of dollars to obtain, because tuition and book expenses become unaffordable. Peripheral cost requirements should not hurt their chances of achieving a degree.?

Senator Singer?s bill, which heads to the full Senate and awaits Assembly action, maintains the requirement that all institutions of higher education in New Jersey offer health insurance coverage for purchase by students who are enrolled full-time at the institution. It does not supersede federal health insurance requirements within the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. (PPACA) would still be applicable.

?Colleges should not have to police their campuses to investigate student?s health insurance,? added Singer,?a board member?of Georgian Court University in Lakewood. ?They are opposed to doing it and would rather use their resources toward improving education and experiences.?

Senator Singer is also a lead sponsor of student loan literacy legislation to assure that New Jersey high schools educate students and families about student loan rates, schedules, debt and defaults.
