GTD guru David Allen recently spoke in an interview with The Atlantic about all the things that keep him organized and productive. He uses a combination of low-tech tools and digital applications to accomplish what he says is the number one thing people need to do to gain control over their lives: "externalize" all the stuff that's coming in.
These are the digital tools he uses:
But mostly it seems he relies on just paper
So I use my little note-taker wallet?that's where most ideas are generated, in strange and weird little places, and so I have a ubiquitous, just-paper-based tool. I take notes, usually paper-based, because it's just easier to do that. It's more ubiquitous, and I like the feel of it. I'm still playing around with various kinds of things.
...and his inbox:
My physical in-basket is my savior. It is my safety net, it is my catchall, it is my "Gee, I don't want to have to think about any of that stuff yet." And so you need that parking lot. It's really critical to have a parking lot like that, because capture is a very different process than decision making and organizing. So I have to keep those distinct, so that allows me a placeholder so that then when it's time, when that stuff starts to pile up, and I go "Okay, it's starting to stink and there's mildew in there, I better empty out my in-basket"?so then that frees up my head; that allows me to just place-hold stuff. But mostly it's just that low-tech stuff I put in there. I probably throw out 80 percent of my notes.
The whole interview is a good read if you're a die-hard GTDer or just interested in how to get out of the "busy trap."

BEIRUT (AP) ? A powerful car bomb exploded in Damascus and scattered fighting broke out in several areas across Syria Friday, quickly dashing any hopes that a shaky holiday cease-fire would hold for four days.
But taking advantage of a lull in fighting in the hours after the truce which went into effect Friday morning, thousands of people took to the streets in several towns and cities, calling for President Bashar Assad's ouster in the largest anti-regime protests in months.
The Syrian military has agreed to cease military operations for four days beginning Friday morning to observe the Eid al-Adha holiday, in line with a proposal by international envoy Lakhdar Brahimi that was endorsed by the U.N. Security Council.
But there were no arrangements for monitoring compliance, and past cease-fire efforts have collapsed as both sides refused to lay down their arms.
In Damascus, a car bomb exploded in a residential area, killing at least five people and wounding more than 30 others, according to state TV and activists. The target of the explosion was not immediately clear.
A Damascus resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity fearing reprisals, said it may have been a residential complex for police forces located in the southern Daff el-Shouq district.
The Islamic extremist group Jabhat al-Nusra, which is fighting alongside the rebels and has rejected the cease-fire, has claimed responsibility for several past bombings targeting the regime.
The group also clashed with government troops at a military base outside the strategic town of Maaret al-Numan, which is on the road between Damascus and the northern city of Aleppo, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on a network of activists on the ground. Fierce fighting has been going on there for several days.
Opposition fighters seized Maaret al-Numan earlier this month, disrupting the ability of the Syrian army to send supplies and reinforcements to the northwest, where troops are bogged down in a stalemate with the rebels in Aleppo, Syria's largest city.
And at least 10 people were killed in government shelling and sniper fire in the Damascus suburbs of Harasta and Douma, and in the northern Idlib province, activists said.
The violence underscored the complexity of the situation, with the badly fragmented opposition sending mixed signals about the truce, some endorsing it and others rejecting it as irrelevant.
Assad's government accepted the truce but left significant loopholes, declaring it would respond to any rebel attack or attempts by foreign forces to intervene.
The Syrian military issued a statement later Friday, saying the armed forces had abided by the cease-fire but responded to violations by "armed terrorist gangs" who opened fire on security forces in several locations across the country. The Syrian government routinely refers to rebels seeking to oust Assad as terrorists.
Still, an overall decline in violence allowed protesters in Damascus and several other cities to pour into the streets in numbers not seen in months.
Protesters rallied after holiday prayers in the capital Damascus and its suburbs, in the northern and southern provinces of Aleppo and Daraa, the central province of Homs and the city of Hama. Three people were wounded when troops tried to disperse protesters in Daraa, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.
In the Damascus suburb of Kfar Batna, Syrians waved rebel flags, cheered, clapped and in some cases danced to revolutionary songs, according to a video posted online.
"May God curse your soul Hafez," they shouted, in reference to Bashar's father and the late Syrian president, Hafez Assad. "Syria wants freedom," the protesters added, according to a video posted online.
"You will fall, Bashar!" shouted protesters in Douma, another video showed.
The videos appeared consistent with AP's reporting on the demonstrations in the area.
Mohammed Saeed, an activist based in Aleppo, which has seen some of the fiercest fighting of the war, said the city was "relatively calm" despite shelling in several areas and clashes near the city's military airport that killed at least four people.
He said via Skype that marches took place in the neighborhoods of al-Shaar, Hanano and Bustan al-Qasr as well as several suburbs.
The festive and mostly peaceful protests were reminiscent of the mass demonstrations that ignited the uprising against Assad in March 2011. In recent months, gatherings have been much smaller, a result of a brutal crackdown by the Assad regime and fighting in the streets as the uprising turned into a full blown insurgency.
"It reminds me of the early days of the revolution, the days when people could go out and protest peacefully," Damascus-based activist Khaled al-Shami said. Security was tight around the capital, and police forces erected additional checkpoints on main roads. In side streets, people performed prayers and protested freely, al-Shami said.
"It seems there is an attempt by both sides to abide by this truce, at least in Damascus," al-Shami said, adding that the truce was "a good thing that unfortunately will not last."
The short holiday cease-fire was the only thing a divided international community could agree on after the failure of a more ambitious plan for an open-ended truce and political transition talks by Brahimi's predecessor, former U.N. chief Kofi Annan, in April.
Brahimi has not said what was supposed to happen when the truce expires on Monday, an ominous sign since Assad and opposition leaders disagree sharply on how to resolve the conflict. Assad refuses to resign, while some opposition leaders say his departure is a prerequisite for any political talks. The fragmented opposition factions disagree over whether to negotiate with Assad at all.
Syria's state news agency said Assad attended holiday prayers in Al-Afram Mosque in Al-Muhajireen district of Damascus. The embattled president was shown briefly on TV, sitting on the mosque floor and praying. He was later seen smiling and shaking hands with worshippers.
Assad has rarely appeared in public during the uprising. He was last shown on state TV Oct. 6, when he laid a wreath to mark the anniversary of the outbreak of the 1973 Arab-Israel war.
More than 35,000 people have been killed, including more than 8,000 government troops, since the uprising against Assad began, according to activists.

Exciting news for James Bond fans: Though Skyfall won?t release stateside for a few more weeks, Bond 24 and 25 are already in the works with the former set for a 2014 release.
Thankfully, we won?t need to wait another four years for the next Bond film, as planning on Bond 24 is already in the works, reports Deadline. Coming off the heels of the announcement that director Sam Mendes is being groomed for a return in the franchise, it is being reported that John Logan, the man behind the Skyfall script, is being quietly signed to pen the next two Bond films.
With Daniel Craig already on-board for another two outings as James Bond, Logan?s signing to screenplay duties is an encouraging development in the oft-times troubled Bond franchise, notes MTV. Word has it that Logan pitched a two-film Bond story arc to Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson during Skyfall?s shooting, and the producers are more than happy to see that plan through.
Craig?s Bond has been unique in that his films seem to speak to each other and carry on with some overall continuity in mind. Quantum of Solace was marketed as a direct sequel to Casino Royale, and though the upcoming Skyfall is more of a one-off than a trilogy rounder, it still speaks to elements in previous Craig films.
Logan?s upcoming Bond 24 and 25 could even feasibly be shot back-to-back.
Even more encouraging, Bond 24 will likely go into production next year to prepare for the November 2014 release window.
Logan is no slouch of a screen-writer, either. He has been nominated for three Oscars for co-writing Gladiator, and providing scripts for Hugo and The Aviator. His work also includes Rango, Coriolanus, Sweeney Todd, The Last Samurai and Any Given Sunday.
Are you excited for the next couple James Bond films?

JAMES Packer has promised a $1 billion luxury hotel - and $114 million a year in gaming tax revenue - to the state government in return for allowing him to build his dream 70-storey Barangaroo resort casino.
Premier Barry O'Farrell yesterday agreed, giving first approvals for the project and indicating Mr Packer will not have to worry about a tender - and perhaps not even have to pay a licence fee - to operate a VIP-only high rollers casino in the hotel.
The new facility will feature more than 150 gaming tables - about half the number at The Star casino - but will be "invitation only" for high rollers, particularly wealthy Asian gamblers or "whales".
"(It's) invitation-only gaming, individuals will not be able to walk off the street to access the facilities. It's not dissimilar to current high roller rooms," Mr O'Farrell said.
He said the government would not approve poker machines for the new casino.
"What they're talking about is something like 1300 jobs during the construction phase, around 1200 jobs when operational," he said.
"When fully operational, it could inject more than $300 million a year into the state's economy. It is about trying to ensure that Sydney attracts investment ... it's about growing the tourism sector."
The hotel tower will have 350 rooms - 20 per cent of those being suites or VIP accommodation.
The top floors will house about 75 luxury apartments while the site will also feature high-end retail, conference facilities and a pool, day spa and amenity deck. The VIP gaming facilities will be named Sky Salons and the Mahogany Room.
Crown vice-president Todd Nisbet told a conference in Sydney yesterday that the hotel's service would lift it from "five star" to "six star", with all staff to be Mandarin-speaking and the hotel to be very much aimed at the Chinese.
The Premier yesterday ruled out calls from former prime minister Paul Keating to return the hotel to an original plan under Labor to have it jut out over the Harbour. "I think that would be a terrible precedent given the Harbour is one of the greatest assets and attributes this city has," he said.
It is understood the new hotel-casino will be fully approved in six months, with Mr O'Farrell indicating the casino licence would be approved early next year.
But the casino will not operate until November 2019, when the exclusivity licence on The Star casino ends.
Even though Mr Packer is expected to win regulatory approval next month to have his stake in Echo Entertainment (owner of The Star) rise to 25 per cent, he is expected to dump his existing 10 per cent in Echo shares when he receives final approval for his Barangaroo facility.
The proposal will not go to tender as Mr O'Farrell has deemed it an "unsolicited proposal". Under the policy, if proponents can come up with an idea and show its "uniqueness", they need not go to tender.
He said the uniqueness of the proposal was partly because Mr Packer had already signed with Lend Lease to build a hotel at Barangaroo.
Echo Entertainment chairman John O'Neill criticised the process, saying The Star casino would have liked a chance to bid for Barangaroo.
He said if a tender had been called, overseas interests would have taken part.
"My own experience when I ran State Bank of NSW and it was privatised and sold by tender ... there were 10 expressions of interest," he said.
Last night, in a dinner address at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Mr Packer said even if there was a tender, he would have won it anyway and thanked both the Labor Party and the Liberal Party for backing the proposal.
"If there was a tender, it would be very hard to see how we wouldn't win," he said, citing his company's reputation for building high-class resorts and casinos.
"There has never been a billion-dollar casino built in the world without slot machines. There's no one who is going to try harder than our company to build something special. This is more than just about money for me. I'm a great believer in Sydney."
Despite yesterday's announcement, Crown's share price fell by 3c to $9.46.

(AP Photo/ Lewis Whyld/PA, File)
LONDON (AP) ? Disgraced BBC entertainer Jimmy Savile was investigated in the 1980s over an allegation of indecent assault, police said Thursday as they announced that 300 potential victims had come forward so far with abuse accusations against the late TV host.
The twin announcements showed how a sex abuse scandal that is engulfing one of Britain's most venerable news organizations was showing no signs of abating.
Officers have interviewed 130 of the 300 potential victims so far and even more are expected to contact authorities, Commander Peter Spindler, leader of the Scotland Yard inquiry, said Thursday.
The well-known children's television and radio presenter is accused of using his fame to coerce vulnerable teens into having sex with him in his car, in his camper van, and even in dressing rooms on BBC premises.
The police commander acknowledged he had been stunned by the volume of abuse allegations reported to his team of 30 officers in the three weeks since details about Savile's activities first came to public attention.
"It is quite staggering, the number of women ... and this is primarily women, we have only got two men in the system so far," Spindler said.
Spindler said Savile, who died last October at age 84, was "undoubtedly" one of the worst sex offenders in recent British history.
Since the allegations aired on British television this month, London police have received three times the usual number of calls about allegations of past sexual abuse. The NSPCC, a leading British children's charity, said it had received 60 percent more calls about abuse cases.
"I have no doubt that we are in a watershed moment for child abuse investigations," Spindler said.
Previously feted for his charity work at hospitals and homes for children, Savile is alleged to have deliberately supported such causes to target troubled youths whose credibility would be questioned if they reported the alleged sexual abuse.
Spindler said although the majority of cases related to Savile alone, some involved the former television presenter and other unidentified suspects acting together. In addition, some potential victims who had reported abuse by Savile also told police about separate allegations against the unidentified men that did not involve the BBC entertainer.
He confirmed that police could seek to prosecute any suspects who are still living but said no one has been arrested or questioned so far.
Spindler also disclosed for the first time that a retired London police officer had contacted Scotland Yard to confirm that he investigated Savile in the 1980s after a young woman alleged he indecently assaulted her inside his trailer while it was parked on BBC premises. The ex-officer explained there hadn't been sufficient evidence to prosecute Savile at the time, Spindler said.
Police have also discovered that a woman contacted Scotland Yard in 2003 to allege Savile had touched her inappropriately in the 1970s but did not seek to press charges. Surrey Police also have acknowledged they questioned Savile in 2007 over an allegation tied to the Duncroft school but prosecutors declined to bring charges.
The Savile scandal has rocked the BBC and prompted disbelief that the presenter's crimes could have gone unnoticed or unreported by colleagues or managers.
Executives are facing sharp questions about what they knew and an internal inquiry is reviewing why a posthumous BBC investigation about Savile's sex crimes was shelved. The report was scrapped weeks before the broadcaster aired a series of tribute shows.
Mark Thompson, BBC director-general from 2004 until last month who is now the incoming CEO of the New York Times, is among those facing questions from U.K. lawmakers. Thompson has insisted that he never met Savile, was unaware of rumors about his behavior and had little knowledge of the cancelled expose.
In a letter to The New York Times staff Thursday, chairman and publisher Arthur Sulzberger said Thompson had thoroughly explained his handling of the issue.
"Mark has provided a detailed account of that matter, and I am satisfied that he played no role in the cancellation of the segment," Sulzberger wrote.
"Our opinion was then and remains now that he possesses high ethical standards and is the ideal person to lead our company," the letter said.
Savile was the original presenter of the music countdown program "Top of the Pops," which ran on BBC television from 1964 to 2006, featuring performances by everyone from The Rolling Stones to the Sex Pistols. For almost 20 years from 1975, Savile also made children's dreams come true on "Jim'll Fix It," a TV show.
Savile championed a host of good causes, frequently running marathons to raise money. He helped to collect millions for the creation of a national spinal injuries center at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in southern England and bequeathed money for a heart unit at Leeds infirmary named the Savile Institute.
He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for services to charity and entertainment and received a papal knighthood from the Vatican.
Prince Charles was among those who paid tribute when Savile died last year.

Information provided by National Alliance on Mental Illness - Published: 2012-10-13
Vice President Joe Biden and U.S. Representative Paul Ryan pulled no punches in Thursday's vice presidential debate, but "mental health" and "mental illness" were never mentioned.
"Finding concern for mental illness is in the presidential debates is like playing a game of Where's Waldo?" said Michael J. Fitzpatrick, executive director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).
"One in four American adults experience a mental health problems in any given year, but in this election year important dimensions and distinctions on issues important to individuals and families affected by mental illness are being overlooked."
During the vice-presidential debate, many exchanges focused on Medicare, but only passing reference was made to Medicaid - a critical life-line for many low-income people living with disabilities.
"NAMI wants to hear President Obama and Governor Romney talk more about Medicaid and mental health specifically when they debate next week," Fitzpatrick said.
"Mental illness does not discriminate. It strikes Democrats, Republicans and independents alike."
NAMI's non-partisan "Mental Health Care Gets My Vote " campaign supports the following priorities:
NAMI also has published two reports:
State Mental Health Cuts: The Continuing Crisis
(www.nami.org/ContentManagement/ContentDisplay.cfm?ContentFileID=147763)
Parity for Patriots: The Mental Health Needs of Military Personnel, Veterans and Their Families
(http://www.nami.org/Content/NavigationMenu/Inform_Yourself/About_Public_Policy/Policy_Reports/ParityforPatriots.pdf)
"Every voter needs to study the issues closely. Look past the rhetoric. Weigh dueling numbers carefully. Apply that kind of scrutiny to every federal, state and local candidate," Fitzpatrick said.
About NAMI - NAMI is the nation's largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. It does not endorse candidates.

Softbank will pay $20 billion in the deal, says CNBC, who cites people close to the situation.
The deal is expected to be announced tomorrow morning.
While several aspects of the deal are still being worked out, CNBC says, "the boards of both companies have signed off on a transaction under which Softbank will buy $8 billion worth of shares directly from Sprint?and tender for another $12 billion worth of the shares from existing holders."
Softbank is gaining this stake in Sprint at a premium. CNBC reports, the price of the offer is $7.30 a share, a large premium to Sprint's current price. Because of the deal's structure, it will not require a shareholder vote.
Last week it was speculated that Japanese telecom giant, Softbank, was interested in purchasing a majority stake in Sprint.
In an internal memo last week, Sprint's CEO, Dan Hesse, advised employees to continue working and "please stay focused on delivering strong fourth quarter results."

Im posting this in this forum, because unfourtunatley, I cant help but to see things from a biblical perspective. Why do so many people fail at truly caring for others? Please dont give me some mushy spiritual bull****. I only want honest answers.
As a woman, a "christian" woman, I thought there were certain things I was supposed to expect from a christian man. like love, care, tenderness, protection, provision. I mean, what man in 2012 does that anymore? Christian or not? Honestly, it seems like christian man are worse to me. At least you know what you getting with an unbeliever.
I mean really, even biblically, it seems that women were only seen as property. A fresh beautiful virgin was praiseworthy, and coveted. But you even have instances of multiple wives, where one was loved more than the other. And to be honest, the only value women in the old testament seem to have was to be screwed, bear children, and raise them, be replaced by somthing young and fresh and eventually die.
I mean I guess I would be okay with that, if my owner properly suppled my living needs. but in 2012, men ARE NOT the providers. Its like women have to take the roles of men, still be a woman, weather you want to or not. Ie carry breast, have periods, birth and raise children, work, forgive, stay attractive, ect. While men seem really only obligated to work, weather it is enough to provide for their families or not.
Women are no longer cared for and provided for, In a lot of cases, they are somtimes the main provider. meanwhile, we have to be understanding of the bull**** reasons men betray, leave, cheat, get tired of us ect. I am seriouse here. It seems like the only real value i have as a woman, is pleasing a mans visual, and sexual satisfaction. Without the guarauntee of his continual care.
At least the men in the bible who treated women, like there cattle, were obligated to provide for them. Even if they had multiple wives. Today some men cant, or wont even take care of one wife.
It just all seems pointless, when you can be cheated on, abandend, forsaken in the in. Whether you have the mans children or not. Than are told to a) accept it, b)get over it, c) move on, and hopefully some other God like man will be interested in your used up self, until he gets tired of you also. But hey whatever the turn out, nothing here on earth matters anyways, because heaven is all that counts. Really?

BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany's interior minister called on Friday for the suspension of visa-free travel for Serbs and Macedonians to the European Union following a surge in asylum applications from citizens of the two Balkan countries.
Serbs and Macedonians accounted for nearly a third of all applications for political asylum in Germany last month, official data showed, though both former Yugoslav republics are candidates to join the European Union and are thus required to uphold its values and freedoms.
Illegal immigration and asylum are likely to prove sensitive issues for German politicians in the countdown to federal elections next autumn.
"The increasing abuse of the asylum system is not acceptable ... The huge inflow of Serbian and Macedonian citizens must be stopped immediately," Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich said in a statement.
The top-selling Bild daily quoted Friedrich as saying: "Visa-free travel must not lead to abuse of the asylum rules. This will strain the readiness of Germans to help the truly needy and persecuted."
The number of Serb asylum applicants in Germany rose threefold in September from the previous month while Macedonian requests jumped 70 percent, the data showed.
Visitors from Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro won the right to visa-free travel in the European Union's border-free Schengen zone in 2009. Citizens of Bosnia and Albania followed suit in 2010.
Late last year the European Union agreed new rules to make it easier to restore visa requirements, to counter fears of a sudden influx of migrants from the western Balkans.
But the bloc's Council of Ministers and the European Parliament have still to approve those rules, which envisage a temporary suspension of visa-free arrangements for countries whose citizens are deemed to be abusing the system.
"It may take up to six more months to get a final agreement," an EU official in Brussels told Reuters.
This week, a lawmaker from Germany's main opposition Social Democrats, Michael Hartmann, urged the authorities to reject bogus asylum applications more swiftly and to focus resources on genuine cases from countries such as Syria and Afghanistan.
Germany receives about 144,000 requests for political asylum per year, down from a peak of 500,000 in 1996, Hartmann said. Germany took in large numbers of refugees from the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s.

If 2012 was the year of the Ultrabook, 2013's going to be remembered by the massive proliferation of laptop / tablet hybrids. One such convertible that's just been given full marks by the FCC is ASUS' TAICHI, an 11.6 or 13.3-inch unit that's packing an Ivy Bridge Core i7, 4GB RAM and, most notably, a display on both sides of its lid. While there's no official word from the company on a launch date, now that the government has given a thumbs up, it can't be too much further out. Plausibly, a rogue Amazon listing has pegged the 11.6-inch model as costing $1,300 and arriving on October 26th, alongside Windows 8.

Want to Drive More Traffic to Your Site? Free Download:The Ultimate How-To Marketing Guide.
After reading today's post below to learn about online marketing techniques for your business, please share it on Twitter and Facebook. ?We appreciate your feedback. Thanks!??

With so much ?buzz? online around Social Media, Blogging, Video Marketing, SEO, etc.
Many businesses and entrepreneurs have lost sight of just how simple this approach to online marketing can be.
Then as we look to the future, with the inevitable tidal-wave of mobile marketing poised to make it?s thundering entrance into the world of commerce, we see even greater opportunity on the horizon for this technique.
Now if you haven?t yet ?clicked? as to what this technique is, then rest assured as all will be revealed.
But, first take a moment to consider these points:
You see through the shifting, often changing, and sometimes shattering world of online marketing.
Email marketing has stood the test of time.
It was the birth of the internet, and has continued to thrive as each ?new-kid-on-the-block? arrived to stake their claim in the online marketing arena.
That?s right, before there was social media, before there was videos and blogging, and before there was search engines, email marketing was not just up and running it was thriving.
At the cutting edge of technology today, we have ?web-enabled? smart phones and other portable devices giving us more access to our email accounts, increasing the odds of more emails being opened.
Yet this ?uncool? nerd of online marketing techniques, is still avoided by so many marketers, because they are busy, off chasing ?likes? or page one rankings or some other flavour of the month.
Unknown to them the power of email marketing lies in it?s simplicity and the fact that you actually own the asset. With an email list, of loving, loyal subscribers your business is immune to any changes that may impact on it by relying on an external source.

For example after much work, you have achieved a page one ranking for your website, and then over-night your search engine changes how it ranks websites, in the morning your website has dropped back to page 47 and your business, that used to be everybody?s business, is now nobody?s business.
Or just when you have finished setting up all your social media accounts on the various platforms along comes that ?new kid on the block? wanting to devour all your time, by whisking you off on another steep ?learning curve, or worse still, causing you to start throwing more money at your outsourcer.
Now in all fairness, all of these marketing platforms offer fantastic potential for you, particularly if you manage to position your campaign in a way that it goes viral.
But for security, longevity and independence in online marketing then email marketing ?has got your back?.
