Mantra forges a relationship with The Mousetrap company: Sales Manager Beau Keller and Sales/Marketing Executive Michelle Doyle Jones with members of?The Mousetrap Company.

Mantra?s Beau Keller who heads up the Sport & Entertainment sales portfolio, told AussieTheatre that the Mantra Arts Partnerships began several years ago, but that his personal interest in the arts has helped develop the idea into a more solid?model.

?Mantra have always been supportive of touring shows around Australia? he?said.

?I guess since I have come on board the fact that I love theatre and seeing shows helps because I have been able to break down the correct door and speak to the right people to get the accommodation partnerships contracts all started.?

Keller explained that while the main partnership involve Mantra accommodating cast and crew and management team, they also assist with ?in kind? marketing of the?shows.

?For The?Mousetrap we have porters, key wallets and book marks all printed and distrubuted through the regions hotels well in advance of the show, as well as other inside hotel features such as tv showing ads for the shows?, he?said.

To date, Mantra Hotels have provided full sponsorship, marketing and accommodation partnerships with major productions such as, MAMMA MIA!, Hairspray, the English National Ballet and Global Creatures? How To Train Your Dragon.

The relationship with Global Creatures will continue in 2013 when Mantra will accommodate cast and crew for War Horse and King Kong. Other cast and crew accommodation partnerships have also been forged with Cirque du Soleil, Moonshadow and Annie the Musical?in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Canberra. With hotels located in all capital cities, Mantra is well placed to accommodate national touring productions.

WHAT IS IT?
The folk duo released a second album, Sounds of Silence, in 1966. However, this is not a first edition of that album. The original cover featured text only ? no photos of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. Later that year, the album was reprinted featuring this image captured by legendary music photographer Guy Webster. The picture appeared on four or five additional versions of the album over the next seven years ? none of them particularly rare. In good condition, your example could fetch $100 (assuming the record is playable), but worn edges and markings on the cover's surface decrease the album's worth.

While Simon & Garfunkel record values top out at $200, a rare album by their contemporary Bob Dylan ? like The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan with four accidental alternate tracks ? can command $20,000.

The Theology of Les Miserables

I cannot think of any work of fiction that conveys the contrast between Law and Grace as vividly and profoundly as?Les Miserables.? As a long-time fan of the novel and the musicals, I went to see the movie recently and enjoyed it immensely. ?With minor variations, it?s a rendering of the musical, and the musical does an extraordinary job of capturing the major moral and theological themes of the novel. ?With a harrowing performance from Anne Hathaway and fantastic range and power from Hugh Jackman (I felt a bit bad for Russell Crowe, who is a fine Javert in pure acting terms but hardly a singer), and strong performances also from those playing Cosette (young and old), Eponine, Marius and the Thenardiers, this is a movie worth your time.

Leah Libresco gets to the theology of the work when she writes about Inspector Javert:

?Javert loves God, in his own way, because Divine Law is the source of order in the world. ?For Javert, the absense of mercy is the greatest mercy of all, because it allows Javert to perfectly understand the world around him. ?Grace is a miracle, a dirty word, a motion to suspend the rules.

?Mercy unmoors the moral stars Javert navigates by, and, as an agent of the Law, he?needs some kind of unfailing light to steer by. ?The more?precisely?he understands the world, the less margin for error he needs to leave. ?But, if God can break the rule that, if Lucifer falls, he will be in flame, how can Javert trust that the promise to the righteous will be kept? ?Perhaps he lacks faith in God?s goodness, but I think he?s also afraid he?d have to give up a little faith in Javert.

After all, if the moral universe is as mechanical as Javert dreams, he can save himself through his own efforts. ?If the rules are fixed and known, then all he has to do is follow them. ?If there are no miracles and no mercy, then everything is within Javert?s understanding, and his mastery is only limited by his self-control. ?God sets the rules, and Javert gets to play a fair game.?

I think she has the Javert part right. ?What I love is the contrast between Javert and Valjean. ?Both are creatures of the gutter (Javert was born in a prison), but their paths from a common origin are strikingly different. ?With a serious SPOILER WARNING for those who have neither read the novel nor seen the musical, here are some of the key contrasts:

• JAVERT has risen to the heights of his current position through unyielding will and meticulous discipline, by virtue of his own efforts. ?VALJEAN rises even farther, but through the decisive intervention of a Bishop who shows him a thoroughly unmerited grace that changes Valjean forever. ?Valjean is, almost literally, born again, as he lets go of his former identity and begins a new identity and a new life.
• JAVERT insists that every person without exception should be judged and punished according to his or her deeds. ?He?s genuinely irritated with Valjean when Valjean refuses to punish him for what Javert perceives to be a misdeed. ?He would agree with Socrates in Plato?s Gorgias?that it is better for a perpetrator to be caught and punished. ?VALJEAN extends to others the same grace that was given him. ?He shows an extravagant grace to Fantine, the woman who worked in his factory and fell into prostitution after she lost her job, and an even more remarkable grace to Javert himself, when he lets the inspector go free from the student rebels? camp.
• For JAVERT, God is essentially Deistic and explicable, even mathematical. ?As Leah illustrates, the celestial mechanics of divine judgment are, in Javert?s philosophy, as brilliantly clear and timelessly predictable as the paths of the starts. ?For VALJEAN, God is personal. ?When he prays to God, God is not merely the source of moral order and truth but a source of passionate love and intimate solace.
• JAVERT is incapable of compassion. ?He is unmoved by Fantine?s protestations regarding her daughter?s need, unmoved by Valjean?s plea to let him care for Cosette before he apprehends him. ?He watches, not hateful but simply unmoved, when a man is pinned underneath a cart, before Valjean lifts the cart to save him. ?Legalism ultimately devolves into something like the Law of Karma: everyone always, in the end, gets what he deserves. ?VALJEAN understands that people are more than their actions. ?Divine grace and mercy is inexplicable apart from ? indeed confers ? the sacred value of each individual.
• Finally, JAVERT does not believe that people can change. ?Once a thief, always a thief. ?Even when all the evidence shows that Valjean is a transformed man, Javert cannot even contemplate it. ?In a world without grace and rebirth, everything must proceed organically from that which precedes it. ?There is nothing new, nothing truly transformative, no dying-to that leads to a new being.

Venezuela VP in Cuba to visit ailing Chavez

HAVANA (AP) ? Venezuela's vice president arrived in Havana on Saturday in a sudden and unexpected trip to visit President Hugo Chavez as he recovers from cancer surgery.

Communist Party newspaper Granma published online a photo of a smiling Vice President Nicolas Maduro being greeted at the airport in the Cuban capital by the island's foreign minister, Bruno Rodriguez.

"From there, (Maduro) went directly to the hospital where President Hugo Chavez Frias is receiving treatment to greet his family members and Venezuelan Science and Technology Minister Jorge Arreaza Monserrat, and to discuss with doctors the adequate moment to visit the President the same day," the paper said.

Granma added that Maduro was accompanied by Venezuelan Attorney General Cilia Flores.

The previous night in Caracas, Venezuela, Maduro did not specify how long he would be away but said Energy Minister Hector Navarro would be in charge of government affairs in the meantime. Maduro's announcement came at the end of a long speech at the inauguration of a state governor, and he offered no information on the purpose of his visit beyond seeing Chavez.

In a speech Saturday, Venezuela's National Assembly President Diosdado Cabello said only that Maduro went to Cuba to visit with Chavez and urge him "to follow his treatment." Venezuelan press officials in Caracas said they had no additional information Saturday.

Maduro's trip comes amid growing uncertainty about Chavez's health.

The Venezuelan leader has not been seen or heard from since undergoing his fourth cancer-related surgery Dec. 11, and government officials have said he might not return in time for his scheduled Jan. 10 inauguration for a new six-year term. There have been no updates on Chavez's condition since Maduro announced Monday night that he had received a phone call from the president who was up and walking.

Venezuela's opposition criticized Maduro for what they said was a lack of transparency surrounding Chavez's health.

"What I still don't understand is who is president," Lawmaker Alfonso Marquina said. "Who is governing the country now? As for the purpose of this sudden and improvised trip, only the national government knows."

Maduro is the highest ranking Venezuelan official to visit Chavez since the surgery. Bolivian President Evo Morales traveled to Cuba last weekend in a quick trip that only added to the uncertainty surrounding Chavez's condition. Morales has not commented publicly on his visit or even confirmed that he saw Chavez while he was there.

Before leaving for Cuba, Chavez acknowledged the precariousness of his situation and designated Maduro as his successor, telling supporters they should vote for the vice president if a new presidential election was necessary. Although Chavez has delegated some administrative powers to Maduro, he did not leave the vice president officially in charge of the presidency.

Venezuela's Democratic Unity bloc of opposition parties suggested Saturday it was time for the government to declare the president temporarily absent from power.

"They are trying to hide what every day is a fact: The government does not want to recognize that there is a temporary absence of the president from his duties," the bloc said in a statement.

On Friday morning, Maduro read a New Year message from Chavez to Venezuelan troops, though it was unclear when the president composed it.

"I have had to battle again for my health," Chavez said in the message. He expressed "complete faith in the commitment and loyalty that the revolutionary armed forces are showing me in this very complicated and difficult moment."

A group of opposition candidates demanded Friday that Maduro provide an official medical report on Chavez's health. Lawmaker Dinorah Figuera said the country needs "a medical report from those who are responsible for the diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of the president."

"The Venezuelan people deserve official and institutional information," Figuera told Venezuelan media.

A legal fight is brewing over what should happen if Chavez, who was re-elected in October, cannot return in time for the inauguration before the National Assembly.

National Assembly Diosdado Cabello insisted Monday that Venezuela's constitution allows the president to take the oath before the Supreme Court at any time if he cannot do it before the legislature on Jan. 10.

Opposition leaders argue the constitution requires that new elections be held within 30 days if Chavez cannot take office Jan. 10. They have criticized the confusion over the inauguration as the latest example of the Chavez government's disdain for democratic rule of law and have demanded clarity on whether the president is fit to govern.

MOSCOW (AP) ? Investigators on Sunday examined flight recorders and other evidence to try to determine the cause of the airliner crash in Moscow that killed five people, an official said.

The Tu-204 belonging to Russian airline Red Wings was carrying eight people, all of them crew members, when it careered off the runway Saturday while landing at Moscow's Vnukovo Airport. It went partly into an adjacent highway, broke into pieces and caught fire.

Four people were pronounced dead soon after the crash and the airline said on its Twitter account that a fifth, a flight attendant, died Sunday. Those who died Saturday were the pilot, co-pilot, flight engineer and another attendant, Red Wings said.

The survivors were reported in critical or serious condition in Moscow hospitals.

Vladimir Markin, a spokesman for Russia's main investigative agency, was quoted by Russian news agencies saying the data recorders were being examined, along with fuel samples. In addition, he said flight documents for the plane have been taken from the airline for examination.

Senate leaders in last-ditch fiscal cliff talks

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Senate's top Democrat and Republican say they're entering last-minute talks with the White House aimed at avoiding the fiscal cliff.

Majority Leader Harry Reid and GOP leader Mitch McConnell gave the relatively upbeat assessment after the duo and top House leaders had what McConnell called a "good" meeting with President Barack Obama on Friday.

Roberto Clemente Death: Baseball Legend Remembered On 40th Anniversary

The 40th anniversary of Roberto Clemente?s death is coming on December 31, and with it are memories of the legacy he for baseball, as well as Nicaragua.

Clemente, born in Puerto Rico, visited Nicaragua?many times when he played on Puerto Rico?s baseball team. He quickly built lasting relationships with the country?s people.

The Huffington Post reports that, when the country experienced an earthquake in 1972, Clemente didn?t hesitate to send supplies and aid to the country, along with his solidarity.

When the last provisions were set to be shipped by private plane. Clemente decided to travel with the crew to deliver them so he could see they were taken to the right recipients.

It is believed that the plane was overloaded beyond its carrying capacity. The jet crashed into the ocean just minutes after take off, killing everyone aboard. Nicaraguans to this day try and honor Clemente?s memory. The government is currently working to build the Roberto Clemente baseball stadium for kids.

Refill Your Travel Toothpaste Bottles with a DIY Adapter

Travel-sized toiletries are often more expensive relative to their normal-sized counterparts. Reader ungullible shares a trick for refilling your travel-sized toothpaste bottles.

When we noted that children-sized toothpaste was TSA-compatible, ungullible shared an even cheaper solution: buy one travel-sized bottle and refill it.

I took two flip-top toothpaste lids, cut off the lids, and glued the top openings together to create a refill adapter. So now when my travel sized toothpaste tube gets empty, I use my adapter to connect the travel tube to my full-sized tube, squeeze, and refill.

We couldn't get ungullible to respond with a picture, but it's pretty easy to see what this would look like: two flip-top lids detached from their tubes and glued together at the "mouth." With some finagling, you could probably refill any toothpaste tube without an "adapter," but this trick would certainly make the process easier.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? The Austin police officer who helped stop Charles Whitman's 1966 sniper rampage from atop the University of Texas tower has died.

Houston McCoy fired two blasts from his shotgun to bring down Whitman, who killed 16 people during nearly two hours of terror on the UT campus. Wayne Vincent, president of the Austin Police Association, said McCoy died Thursday in the rural West Texas town of Menard.

McCoy was 72 and had been battling a terminal illness for the past year.

Whitman wounded dozens of others before McCoy and fellow officer Ramiro Martinez made their way to the observation deck. Martinez also fired on Whitman.

Vincent called McCoy a good police officer who "answered the call" unsure whether he would live upon reaching the top of the tower.

OUYA Now Shipping Android Gaming Console Dev Units

The open-source gaming console OUYA has officially started shipping units to developers, keeping on track with the company?s planned production schedule. The first batch of developer hardware should be arriving before January 10th, giving devs plenty of time to work on games and apps prior to the planned March or April consumer release date.

OUYA was a highly?publicized?Kickstarter project,?which closed a public funding round with more than $8.5 million ?from over 63 thousand backers. The development schedule for the Android-based OUYA console was very?aggressive, promising developer units just four months after funding. This announcement means that the gaming startup is still on track, which can?t be said for other high-profile Kickstarter campaigns such as the Pebble watch or the Elevation Dock.

More and more games and apps are announcing OUYA support, such as the OnLive! streaming game service, VEVO music videos, XBMC and TuneIn radio. OUYA is also partnering with Square Enix to bring the popular RPG series Final Fantasy to the console, starting with Final Fantasy III.

The OUYA console is based open source, making big-screen gaming more accessible to indie developers. The consumer OUYA hardware costs only $99, much less than an Xbox or Playstation 3. If the OUYA console is a success, it could revolutionize the living room gaming industry.

Nissan upgrades US Leaf warranties, will 'restore' batteries that lose too much charge

Nissan has thrown down the warranty gauntlet to other EV makers by announcing it would be the first to "restore" battery capacity if a Leaf's full charge fell below 9 out of 12 "bars" within 5 years or 60k miles. The new clause was announced by VP Andy Palmer and will go into effect in spring of next year on all models, including those sold in 2011 and 2012. The company stressed it would only "repair or replace the battery under warranty with a new or remanufactured unit to restore capacity at or above a minimum of nine bars," and not a full charge -- saying a gradual, but not excessive loss of charge was normal. Nissan added that it'd look to improve the accuracy of the battery gauge, since the aforementioned bars on the dash were computer managed and not exactly scientific. All of this applies to US-only vehicles for now, but similar policies will soon go into effect worldwide, according to the statement. Italy's borrowing costs rise ahead of elections

ROME (AP) ? Italy's borrowing costs rose slightly Thursday in an auction of six-month bonds held in the wake of Premier Mario Monti's resignation and uncertainty about his participation in the campaign for February's elections.

The Italian Treasury sold the ?8.5 billion ($11.24 billion) in paper Thursday, but the interest rate charged on the bond was 0.949 percent, up from 0.919 percent in November's auction. Demand was 1.57 times the amount on offer.

Italy's borrowing costs have fallen over the past year thanks to a combination of the reforms introduced by Monti's technical government and the European Central Bank's offer to buy up bonds in countries struggling with their debts. However, Monti resigned last week after Silvio Berlusconi's party yanked support for his technical government. He remains on in a caretaker role.

In his end-of-year press conference, Monti excluded running for office but said he would consider leading the next government if politicians who back his reform agenda request it. In the days since, he has published a detailed, 25-page political platform and urged like-minded politicians to back it. He sent his first tweet boasting of having saved Italy "from disaster" and calling for politics to be renewed.

All of which has led to widespread speculation that it's just a matter of time before he becomes an official candidate, in one form or another. Italian newspapers on Thursday were full of speculation about Monti's behind-the-scenes jockeying, whether he'll head a ticket of likeminded politicians, his role in selecting other candidates to run, possible alliances and feuds that will be formed in the next two months.

"No one understands if he'll remain neutral, if he'll head a Monti ticket linked to other like-minded tickets, or if he will lead a single ticket that absorbs all the centrist parties," analyst Luca Ricolfi wrote in Thursday's La Stampa, adding that it is unlikely that Monti himself has decided on what course to take.

The center-left Democratic Party is ahead in the polls with about 30 percent of the vote, and is eager to see Monti fade from the political scene for fear that he will take away votes. Berlusconi's People of Liberty party trails in the polls and is even more openly hostile to Monti's jockeying after the he spurned Berlusconi's offer to lead a center-right ticket.

The Democratic Party got a boost Thursday with the decision by the country's respected anti-mafia prosecutor, Pietro Grasso, to run for office under the party ticket. The ANSA news agency said Grasso would make the announcement official at a press conference Friday with the center-left's candidate for premier, Pierluigi Bersani.

Berlusconi, meanwhile, has been on TV over the past few days, promising that if elected he would remove the property tax on primary residences that Monti re-imposed as part of his austerity measures. Berlusconi had cut the unpopular tax soon after taking office in 2008, at the start of his third stint as premier.

Monti has defended the tax as both necessary and reasonable, given that most industrialized countries impose such a tax on homeowners' primary residence.

Charities Got Fewer but Bigger Online Gifts Last Week - Prospecting ...

The number of gifts people are making online slowed last week for the second time in a row, compared with this time a year ago, but because donors are giving much larger average gifts, charities are barely feeling a decline in donations.

The number of gifts fell 12 percent last week, following a decline of 6 percent in the second week of December.

Still, the total dollar value of online gifts dropped by less than 1 percent last week because the average online gift rose to $149.21, up from $131.92 in the same week of 2011.

Those figures, based on donations to 8,700 charities that accept donations through the nonprofit group Network for Good, come after a promising start?to the giving season last month and in initial days of December. The increases were triggered in part by the number of appeals for Superstorm Sandy and #GivingTuesday, an effort to increase charitable giving after Thanksgiving.

The lackluster fundraising returns in online giving this month seem to mirror the sluggish pace of holiday sales, which retailers say may be the worst since 2008.

But fundraising experts caution not to take too much from online-giving patterns because those gifts are a small percentage of what many charities raise.

What?s more, not all donations are suffering. Many donors are making large contributions this year because of fears that Congress won?t come to a deal on the fiscal cliff, allowing taxes to rise, and concerns that legislators could limit write-offs for charitable deductions next year.

UK's Pearson invests in Barnes & Noble's Nook

LONDON (AP) ? Pearson, the U.K. publisher and education company, is to take a 5 percent stake in Barnes & Noble's NOOK e-reader as technology companies seek new inroads into the potentially lucrative business of digital textbooks for schools.

Pearson PLC will pay $89.5 million cash for a 5 percent stake in NOOK Media LLC which includes the bookseller's e-reader and tablets, its digital bookstore and its 674 stores serving U.S. colleges. Barnes & Noble will hold 78.2 percent of the business and Microsoft will have about 16.8 percent, the company said Friday.

Major tech companies have looked for inroads into the industry, seeing tablets like the iPad and the NOOK as replacements for the dozens of books that students must lug to and from school each day.

Walter Isaacson in his biography of Steve Jobs wrote about meetings between the co-founder of Apple Inc. and major publishers to accomplish just that before his death last year.

Janney Capital Markets described the tie-up between Pearson and Barnes & Noble as an "online education dream team."

"After this investment from Pearson, it is more clear that Nook Media has its sight set on transforming the way education is administered in the U.S. and around the world," analyst David Strasser wrote.

Pearson is the largest higher educational publisher in the world and the largest in kindergarten-through-high school publisher in the United States, Janney said. The company, which also owns the Financial Times and whose Penguin book brand is in the process of being merged with Random House, reported that its textbooks and training made 1.9 billion pounds ($3 billion) in revenue the first six months of 2012.

Will Ethridge, CEO of Pearson North America, says his company had worked with Barnes & Noble for decades and have invested heavily in providing engaging and effective digital reading experiences.

"It is another example of our strategy of making our content and services broadly available to students and faculty through a wide range of distribution partners," Ethridge said.

Barnes & Noble Inc. has invested heavily in the Nook e-reader. It has faced tough competition from online retailers like Amazon.com and discount stores, with shoppers moving away from traditional books in favor of electronic books.

Game changing diagnostic & prognostic prostate cancer genetic

Researchers at the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson (KCC) have developed potentially game-changing diagnostic and prognostic genetic tests shown to better predict prostate cancer survival outcomes and distinguish clinically-relevant cancers.

The team, led by Richard G. Pestell, M.D., Ph.D., Director of the KCC and the Chair of the Department of Cancer Biology at Thomas Jefferson University, report their preclinical findings from a blinded, retrospective analysis of over 350 patients and mouse study in a recent issue of the journal of Cancer Research.

Using an oncogene-specific prostate cancer molecular signature, the researchers were able to separate out men who died of prostate cancer versus those who lived, and more specifically, identifying men who died on average after 30 months (recurrence free survival). The diagnostic test distinguished patients with clinically relevant prostate cancer from normal prostate in men with elevated prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels.

The researchers worked with three oncogenes previously associated with poorer outcomes in prostate cancer: c-Myc , Ha-Ras, and v-Src.

The test, the researchers say, is superior to several previously published gene tests and to the Gleason scale, which is a rating given to prostate cancer based upon its microscopic appearance and currently used to help evaluate the prognosis of men with the disease.

Given the diversity of prostate cancer outcomes?some men live two years after diagnosis, others live for more than 20 more years? a new oncogene-specific signature like this could not only help better identify prostate cancer risk but also test targeted therapies?by way of a new prostate cancer cell line.

These studies describe the first isogenic prostate cancer cell lines that metastasize reliably in immune competent mice. Previous studies were in immune deficient mice.

?This oncogene signature shows further value over current biomarkers of prediction and outcomes,? said Dr. Pestell. ?Such a signature and cell line may also enable the identification of targets for therapies to better treat prostate cancer, which takes the lives of over 27,000 men a year.?

In breast cancer, the identification of tumor subsets with various gene signatures has improved clinical care for patients because of targeted therapies.

The work here by the KCC aims to identify gene patterns and subsequent tests in prostate cancer that could serve similar purposes. But to help develop such therapies, model systems that closely resemble human disease are required. To date, there have been several limitations with currently available cell lines.

Although important transplantation experiments have been conducted using human prostate cancer cell lines in immune deficient animals, the immune system plays an important role in prostate cancer onset and progression making it imperative to develop prostate cancer cell lines that can be studied in immune competent animals.

Also, although the transgenic mouse has been an effective model to study the molecular basis of human cancers, the prostate cancer mouse models have long latency and often unpredictable metastasis.

Here, the researchers succeeded in overcoming these issues.

The oncogene-specific prostate cancer molecular signatures were recapitulated in human prostate cancer and validated in distinct populations of patients as a prognostic and diagnostic test.

What?s more, the researchers demonstrated how the isogenic prostate cancer cell lines metastasized in immune-competent mice.

?Identification of gene signatures in breast cancer has allowed for a deeper understanding of the disease, and this paper moves us steps closer to being able to follow a similar trajectory with prostate cancer. Today, such an understanding and a formidable testing ground for new therapies is lacking for this disease,? Dr. Pestell said. ?With this new oncogene-specific prostate cancer molecular signature, we have a valuable prognostic and diagnostic resource that could help change the way we manage and treat prostate cancer.?
